Sunflower Creative Arts

THE POWER OF PLAY

Sunflower respects children’s choices and voices. Helping children and parents find and express their own voice has been part of Sunflower since the very beginning. Why?

Because people who know themselves are free to be themselves, and to live their lives with the confidence, creativity and compassion much needed in today’s world. Lessons learned in small moments of child-directed play make a positive impact on children and their families for years to come.

Thank you for all you do to raise your voice for play and support Sunflower as we empower children to be confident, creative and compassionate through Play, Nature and the Arts.

Sunflower Moments

To gain a better appreciation of how and what children learn through play, parent helpers and teachers at Seedlings preschool are encouraged to step back and observe. The Sunflower Moments shared in this annual report were transcribed from the 2016-2017 Seedlings observation books.

Sunflower Moment: Audrey sits at the art table by herself, drawing sunflowers, and laughs at the jokes she hears being told nearby. She talks openly, confidently, and quickly about her plan for the next set of drawings. She observes others around her and remains quietly content to work on her own project.

Voices of Confidence

At Sunflower, we respect the thoughts, emotions and words of each child and give children the freedom to choose their own activities. This leads to a foundation of self-confidence children can carry with them throughout their lives.

Sunflower teaches children to embrace life, take advantage of every moment that is given to them, respect others and never lose sight of their own inner self.

Voices of Creativity

Opportunities for creativity help children express themselves, understand the world, and make life – and lifelong learning – all the richer. Your support helps Sunflower give children the time, space and freedom to imagine and create through free play, nature exploration and process-oriented art.

As a Seedlings Summer Camp counselor, it was such an amazing experience to see kids at the science table realizing that if you mix blue and yellow, it makes green – because I remember having that same realization when I was a Seedling. I find it incredible that they get to learn stuff like that through experience rather than being taught it in a classroom.

Amelia Glas

age 16, Seedlings Summer Camp counselor, Seedlings and Sunflower theater alum

Voices of Compassion

The ability to work together, despite differences, is a vital skill for all. At Sunflower, both children and parents have opportunities to learn and practice empathy, compassion, creative problem solving, conflict resolution, communication and respect for others.

Compassion is built into the DNA of Sunflower. Treating children with the respect they deserve, no matter how they’re behaving in a given moment, is a rare feature in today’s society, but one that is needed if we want kids to develop self-confidence and to thrive. As I look at my children now – both young adults – I know that part of what makes them the happy, successful, compassionate people they are can be traced back to their wonderful years with Sunflower.

Thank You

Sunflower has a diverse volunteer corps and donor base, including current families, alumni and other members of the community. Your generous donations of money and time make everything we do possible.

Your Support in Action

Programs

As more and more families seek enrollment, you help us meet that need by providing additional opportunities for hands-on experience with Sunflower’s philosophy. Last year your support made a difference in the lives of 277 families – the largest number enrolled in Sunflower programs in our history – in classes ranging from parent/child to preschool to after-school to summer camp.

Sunflower Moment: Susan is at the table with cornstarch, glitter, water, watercolors, and shaving cream. She is with a group of nine Seedlings. One only wants dry cornstarch and rubs it all over her body and runs off. Some want it really wet and others not. The kids watch as Susan adds blue dye to yellow water. Some say it is turning green, others say black or blue. One says it looks like oil.

Parent and Teacher Education

Parent education is an important part of what we do at Sunflower. Your support helped us deliver education to families through social media and email, as well as 67 hours of formal parent education, including Parent Toolbox workshops and one-on-one conferences with Seedlings and Little Seedlings parents. In addition, Sunflower teachers offered hundreds of hours of informal support throughout the year.

You helped Sunflower spread the message that play is learning to 23 student observers, from Lynn University College of Education and Palm Beach State College, exposing future teachers to an alternative and proven educational model.

Volunteering

As parent helpers, event organizers, and in countless other ways, you donated nearly 4,000 hours of your time and talents.

You supported Sunflower Roots & Shoot’s partnership with the Delray Beach Children’s Garden, which gives club members, ages 5-12, the opportunity to learn through community service.

Community

Community has always been at the heart of everything we do at Sunflower. Last year, you helped us grow this sense of connection by bringing play, nature and art to over 900 families at free community events like Gather in the Garden monthly potlucks, Let’s G.O.! (Get Outside!) family nature exploration, BYOPicnic to the Beach and the annual Ice Castle Festival & Play Day.

Generosity

273 families leaped to the challenge at our annual Hop, Skip & a Jump-A-Thon playful walkathon. You helped raise a record-breaking $21,476 for Sunflower programs, with over 300 donations from 80 participating teams.

You were a Superhero for Play! In a mere 24 hours during Great Give 2017, you helped raise $14,259 in support of Sunflower’s need-based Scholarship Fund, which also is supported by a generous $20,000 grant from the Batchelor Foundation.

Financials, July 2016 – June 2017

Sunflower had an operating surplus in 2016-2017 due to a one-time special gift. We do not anticipate an operating surplus in 2017-2018. The Board has allocated most of the surplus to establish an operating reserve fund and a deferred maintenance fund. The remainder will be spent on the purchase of new long-lasting classroom materials, computers for staff, and new play advocacy and outreach efforts in honor of Sunflower’s 25th Anniversary.

Sunflower Moment: In tears, Katie says: “Nobody wants to play with me.” Dakota is quietly observing Katie being sad. Ten minutes later, he kneels in front of Katie and says: “Katie, I want to play with you.” The two children walk away hand-in-hand and go on to dance at the top of the hill.

A Home for Sunflower: Capital Campaign

In 2015 Sunflower purchased and renovated a property, creating our current home in Delray, which allowed us to grow from serving 133 children in 2014-2015 to 304 in 2016-2017. Our Seedlings preschool has nearly doubled in size from 40 children to 78 children in the same time frame. We added a second two-morning session of Little Seedlings for two-year-olds and a full summer camp program, as well. Our multi-year Capital Campaign is underway! Capital gifts allow us to reduce the debt we acquired with this purchase, freeing resources to invest in our children for even greater community and family impact. Thank you to all who have supported this important goal so far.

Total Project Expenses: $1,371,971
